Pay car parks
There is a choice of pay & display (cash only) or pay by phone. Charges apply 8am to 6pm starting from £1.80 rising to £6 all day. All car parks support short stay and long stay.
1. Shawcroft DE6 1GH
Shawcroft is the biggest car park in Ashbourne with 191 spaces, toilets and electric car charging. Follow this link for more information.
2. Swimming Pool DE6 1DR
The swimming pool car park has 85 spaces. It is accessed from Clifton Road, near the hospital. The Tissington Trail starts here so its a great place to park if you want to do the trail and also visit the town centre shops and cafes.
It's about 5 minutes walk to the town centre. To get there, go up to the main road alongside the car park and turn left. Cross over the main road at the pedestrian crossing and carry on up the main road to the T junction. Turn right.......
To get to the Tissington Trail, walk to the far end of the car park and you will find a footpath / cycle track through the tunnel.
3. The Tissington Trail
Please follow this link for the main Tissington Trail car park. You can also use the swimming pool car park as above.
4. Bus station DE6 1BW
This small car park is accessed from King Edward Street and is very convenient for the town centre.
5. Clifton Road DE6 1DR
This is the only coach park in town, but also has space for 14 cars. It is the best car park to use for St Oswald's hospital, and the doctors surgeries, if their own car parks are full.
It's also good for the town centre, just 10 minutes walk, past the leisure centre and follow the directions above for the swimming pool car park.
6. Cattle Market DE6 1GQ
The Cattle Market car park is the best car park for St John's Church and also convenient for the market place. It is very steep so best avoided if your handbrake is dodgy or you have limited mobility. To get to the market place, walk to the bottom of the hill and turn right.
Free long-stay parking
a. The Pavilion DE6 1EJ
Parking at the Pavilion is free. It's 10 mins walk to the market place, either through the park or along Cokayne Avenue.
b. Waterside retail park DE6 1DU
The Ashbourne Waterside car park is free to use whilst the shops are open (limited to four hours but we've never seen an inspector).
It's 20 mins walk to the market place along the main road. Or take a more scenic route - go down the far side of The Range, down a short (but steep) slope and join a tarmaced path that will take you through the water meadows. Just before the path joins a housing estate, keep left and follow the path beside the river. This will bring you out near the Leisure Centre. Cross the bridge and walk up the road and you will be on Church Street.
c. Shrovetide statue DE6 1AY
This private land but currently has no parking restrictions and is very popular with dog-walkers. The surface is full of pot-holes and very bumpy but fine if you drive slowly. The entrance is opposite the cemetery.
There is enough space here for motorhomes. In the corner is a short footpath to the Shovetide statue.
It is 15 mins walk to the town centre, either along Mayfield Road or (much nicer), cross the bridge and turn left to join the water meadows path as per instructions above.
d. Roadside parking
There is lots of free long stay roadside parking but anything near the town tends to fill up very early in the day. Drive around and you might strike lucky.
Free short-stay parking
a. Sainsbury's DE6 1AA
Sainsbury's car park offers 2 hours free, using APNR for enforcement. There is no requirement to be a customer but it would be polite to buy something.
b. Waterside retail park (see above)
c. Roadside parking
There is lots of free short stay roadside parking and if you are prepared to drive around you are sure to find somewhere. Places include...
- School Lane - 2 hours - by St Oswalds Church.
- Church street - 1 hour - opposite the Methodist Church
- Mayfield Road - 1 hour - by the school.
- Compton - herringbone and parallel spaces - 1 hour.
- Cokayne Avenue - 1 hour.
d. Derbyshire Dales car parks
There is 30 minutes free in the bus station, Shawcroft and Clifton Road car parks. You must leave after your 30 mins are up and you need a ticket from the machine.
